Monticchiello
Hidden in the Heart of the Val d’Orcia, Yours to Discover
Perched above the Val d’Orcia is a fortified medieval village shaped by centuries of history, resilience, and collective life. Monticchiello is the true heart of the Val d’Orcia.

Origins & the Middle Ages
Monticchiello emerged as a fortified settlement during the Middle Ages, positioned strategically between Siena and Florence. Its walls, towers, and compact streets were designed for defence - but survival depended as much on cooperation as stone.
Between Powers
Caught between rival city-states, the village endured conflict, shifting alliances, and long periods of uncertainty. These pressures shaped a strong collective identity that remains visible today.
Decline & Renewal
Like many hill towns, Monticchiello faced depopulation in the 20th century. Rather than surrendering to abandonment or tourism spectacle, the community chose a different path- one rooted in reflection, participation, and cultural continuity.
Monticchiello Today
Today, Monticchiello remains small, inhabited, and thoughtful. It is a place where history is carried forward- not frozen.

Where to stay
While Monticchiello offers a small selection of charming accommodation, staying within the village allows you to experience its unique atmosphere after the day visitors have departed. Evenings are wonderfully peaceful, and mornings begin with quiet streets, golden light and sweeping views across the Val d'Orcia. If accommodation in the village is limited, nearby Montepulciano is an excellent alternative. Just a short drive away, it offers a wider range of hotels, guesthouses and restaurants while providing easy access to Monticchiello and the surrounding countryside. Many visitors choose Montepulciano as a base, combining the energy of a larger historic town with the tranquillity and authenticity of Monticchiello.
Eat like a local

From traditional Tuscan osterias serving handmade pici and local specialities to intimate restaurants, wine bars and long lunches overlooking the Val d’Orcia, dining here is very much part of the experience. Local ingredients, regional wines and simple, generous cooking are at the heart of it all.
